JOYDIVISION AQUAglide Neutral 200 ml at a glance

AQUAglide is the water-based lubricant that the German JOYDIVISION calls its original. The manufacturer describes it on its overview page as "the original for 20 years", and on the product page for the 200 ml tube as a "wasserbasiertes medizinisches Gleitgel" — a water-based medicinal glide gel. In Swedish stores, it is most often sold as Aquaglide Neutral, where "neutral" distinguishes the original without flavor from the flavored variants with strawberry, raspberry, vanilla, and exotic flavor.

This review applies exclusively to the 200 ml tube with EAN 4028403117046, which JOYDIVISION sells under item number 11704. Four Swedish stores had it in their product feeds during the price check on September 12, 2026, and three of them had it in stock. Cheapest in stock was Joyland at 149 SEK, which corresponds to 74.50 SEK per 100 ml. Most expensive were Mshop and Joyme at 229 SEK each.

What makes AQUAglide interesting to review is not that information is missing, but that there is too much of it. The manufacturer publishes a complete ingredient list — but there are two different lists in circulation, and both originally come from JOYDIVISION itself. The manufacturer publishes a pH range for its lubricants, which is unusual, but there is no osmolality. And the tube comes in at least three label versions, where one calls the contents "medizinisches Gleitgel" and the other "Premium Gleitgel".

Which AQUAglide is it? EAN, item number, and sizes

The EAN number can be linked to the correct product via several independent routes. Mshop’s structured product data links gtin13 4028403117046 to the variant "Aquaglide Neutral – 200 ml". The German online pharmacy Shop Apotheke lists the PZN and EAN as 00980949 / 4028403117046. The retailer Condomz lists the same gtin13 along with the manufacturer’s item number 11704 as the mpn, and it is precisely item number 11704 that JOYDIVISION’s own product page for "AQUAglide, 200 ml" carries. Joyme states the item number D11704. The number is also built around the item number: 4028403 is the company prefix, 11704 is the article, and 6 is the check digit.

AQUAglide Neutral comes in several sizes. The manufacturer’s overview page mentions 50, 75, 125, 200, and 1000 ml, and the manufacturer’s product information sheet also lists portion packs of 3 ml. The retailer WorldCondoms links 50 ml to the barcode 4028403118951, 75 ml to 4028403117039, 125 ml to 4028403118968, and 1000 ml to 4028403117091. The product information sheet explains why the same size can have multiple numbers: 50 ml and 125 ml are available in multiple language editions with their own article numbers. For 200 ml, the sheet lists only one edition, article 11704, with label text in German, English, Spanish, Dutch, Italian, Danish, and Greek.

All four Swedish stores in the price comparison sell this tube. Joyland, Mshop, and Joyme list 200 ml in the product name and in the specification, and Sexonics product page is titled "Joy Division Aquaglide 200 ml NATUREL" with reference 4028403117046. Sexonic also has a second product page for the same item, "JOYDIVISION AQUAGLIDE – LUBRICANT 200 ML", with the same reference and the same price — the same product twice in the range, not another variant.

Not the same as AQUAglide Gleit + Verwöhngel

It’s worth warning about a mix-up. JOYDIVISION also sells a product called "AQUAglide Gleit + Verwöhngel neutral, 200 ml" — same brand, same volume, and the same word "neutral". It’s a separate product with article number 11760, described as a combination of glide and massage gel, and with a recommended price of 20,65 euro versus the original’s 18,44 euro. So if you look for "AQUAglide neutral 200 ml", you could end up at both. Anyone who wants the original should look for article number 11704 or EAN 4028403117046.

Is AQUAglide a medical device?

The manufacturer’s product page says yes, in words: the product is described as "waterbased medical lubricant" and "THE medical lubricant that has been tried and tested millions of times". The German price comparison site MediPreis, which presents information from the pharmacy register, states "Medizinprodukt: Ja" for PZN 00980949, and Shop Apotheke describes it as a medical-device glide lubricant that has been dermatologically and clinically tested. In the manufacturer’s FAQ, it writes that the CE mark signals that a lubricant is a legal medical device product and that you should look for it on the packaging.

But JOYDIVISION does not publish the CE number, the risk class, or which notified body has reviewed the product. The only thing that appears in the manufacturer’s own structured data is a company-level entry: "CE-Zertifizierung Medizinprodukte MDR 2017/745". None of the images of the tube that the shops and the manufacturer publish show the back side, so the number there also cannot be read. This is what separates AQUAglide from, for example, pjur Aqua, where the back of the label with CE 0482 and the number of the notified body is published by the manufacturer.

There is also an inconsistency in the manufacturer’s own material. The older version of JOYDIVISION’s product information leaflet, which DocMorris publishes, lists "Medizinprodukt" and "dermatologisch + klinisch getestet" among the features. The version that Sanicare publishes, with a file name dated 2023-03, has the same layout but lacks both the word Medizinprodukt and "klinisch getestet" — it only says "dermatologisch getestet". At the same time, the manufacturer’s current product page calls the product medical. The manufacturer does not explain what has changed and why.

Even the question of who the manufacturer is has several answers. The product information leaflet names JOYDIVISION international AG in Hannover. The manufacturer’s website, in its structured data, lists JOYDIVISION International GmbH at another address in Hannover, and Shop Apotheke lists the same GmbH as the responsible person in the EU. However, the German pharmacies’ product register lists Dr. Dagmar Lohmann pharma + medical GmbH in Berlin as the manufacturer. This does not necessarily contradict anything — a product can have a brand owner and a different registered manufacturer — but it’s worth knowing if you want to ask a question about the product and wonder who should receive it.

Ingredients: two lists from the same manufacturer

JOYDIVISION’s current product page lists six ingredients in INCI names: Aqua, Glycerin, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Phenoxyethanol, Allantoine, and Benzoic Acid. The same list is on the manufacturer’s page for Gleit + Verwöhngel, which suggests that the two products today share the formula even though they are sold as different items.

It’s a short list. It contains no oil, no fat, no fragrance, and no aroma ingredient. The manufacturer describes the product as water-soluble, fat-free, crystal-clear, and vegan, and the manufacturer’s FAQ says that JOYDIVISION exclusively uses plant-based glycerin in its lubricants. Preservation is handled by phenoxyethanol and benzoic acid — two of the alternatives to parabens mentioned in WHO/UNFPA/FHI360’s guidance on lubricants, with the message that water-based lubricants must contain preservatives to prevent microbial growth.

What does each ingredient do?

Aqua is water and carries the entire product. Glycerin is in second place and is the humectant ingredient. It is also the ingredient, according to the WHO note, that most strongly determines osmolality—meaning the amount matters—but the amount is not published.

Hydroxyethylcellulose is a cellulose derivative that makes the gel viscous; it is the only thickener in the list. Phenoxyethanol and Benzoic Acid are the preservatives. Allantoine — allantoin — is normally used as a skin-care additive. An ingredient that is only there to adjust pH is not included in the current list, but benzoic acid is an acid and affects the level of acidity.

Compared with many competitors, one thing is also missing: there is no glycol such as propylene glycol or ethoxydiglycol. Glycerin is the only humectant ingredient. It is relevant for osmolality, because the WHO note states separate limits for glycerol and propylene glycol and a lower combined limit when multiple glycols are mixed.

The old and the new list

The most significant finding in the desk review is that three out of four Swedish shops publish a different ingredient list than the manufacturer’s current one. Joyland and Mshop both state Aqua, Glycerin, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Sodium Methylparaben, Sodium Benzoate, and Lactic Acid. Sexonic and Joyme publish no ingredient list at all.

That list is not something the shops made up. It is stated verbatim—with “Vegetable Glycerin”—in JOYDIVISION’s own product information sheet, in both versions that German pharmacies publish. The German pharmacies medpex and DocMorris also reproduce it in their product data, as do the foreign retailers WorldCondoms and Peppery Spot. So this is an earlier version of the formula, where preservation was handled by sodium methylparaben and sodium benzoate and pH was adjusted with lactic acid.

The difference matters to just one group of buyers, but for that group it matters a lot: the older list contains a paraben, the current one does not. So someone who avoids parabens cannot rely on the product text on Joyland or Mshop—the text describes a formula that, according to the manufacturer, no longer applies. But it also can’t be trusted blindly on the manufacturer’s side, because JOYDIVISION does not publish when the recipe was changed, and tubes from older production runs can still be available in stock. Peppery Spot puts it best: the ingredients can be changed, and the current list is printed on the packaging. It is the list on the tube you get that applies.

Does AQUAglide contain glycerin and parabens?

Glycerin: yes, in both versions, and in second place directly after water. Parabens: not according to the manufacturer’s current list, but the older list—which is still shown by two Swedish shops—contains sodium methylparaben.

For anyone who wants to avoid both glycerin and parabens, JOYDIVISION has its own variant: the manufacturer’s overview page states that AQUAglide sensitive is free from glycerin and parabens and contains hyaluronic acid. It is not included in this review and has a different EAN. It’s worth knowing that it exists, because Aquaglide Neutral and AQUAglide sensitive are placed next to each other in several shops.

Fragrance and taste: no. Neither of the two ingredient lists contains fragrance or flavoring substances, and “neutral” in the product name is what distinguishes the original from the flavored variants. The manufacturer’s product information sheet states “Lebensmittelqualität” — food quality — and that the lubricant is suitable for oral sex.

pH and osmolality: one is published, the other is not

On the product page it only says that the pH value is “optimiert,” adapted to the sensitive intimate area. But the manufacturer’s FAQ goes further than most competitors: JOYDIVISION states that the pH value for the company’s lubricant lies in the range 4.6 to 5.2, and says that it is adapted to the pH of the vaginal flora. The answer is given under the question about the pH of water-based lubricants.

Two caveats are necessary. The first is that the range applies to JOYDIVISION’s lubricants as a group, not explicitly to AQUAglide Neutral 200 ml; the manufacturer does not provide an individual value for this specific product. The second is that the shops express the same thing in different ways: Mshop writes “optimala ph-värdet,” Joyme “pH-optimerat,” and the German pharmacies medpex and DocMorris “pH-hautneutral.” None of it is a number.

Osmolaliteten publiceras inte — neither on the product page, in the FAQ, in the product information sheet, nor at any of the shops. The glycerin content is not published either. It’s the most common gap on the lubricant market, but it’s notable here because, in its overview text, the manufacturer writes that AQUAglide has been developed to get closer to natural vaginal moisture than most other lubricants. Osmolality is exactly the measure that would show how close it is.

What WHO’s advice says

The most cited reference for these values is WHO/UNFPA/FHI360’s advice on lubricants for use with condoms from 2012. It’s written for procurement organizations, not for consumers, but it’s still the best benchmark available.

On pH, the note states that the healthy vaginal pH normally lies between 3.8 and 4.5, that a vaginal lubricant preferably should have a pH of around 4.5, and that a rectal lubricant is around 5.5–7, and that procurement officers should buy lubricants with a pH of 7 or lower. JOYDIVISION’s ranges of 4.6–5.2 therefore land just above the vaginal ideal and below the rectal range—an in-between position that lies well within the limit at pH 7. The note itself states that the two ideals cannot be achieved in a single lubricant.

On osmolality, the note states that vaginal secretions normally are at 260–290 mOsm/kg and semen at 250–380 mOsm/kg, that a lubricant ideally should not exceed 380 mOsm/kg, and that most commercial lubricants are at 2,000–6,000 mOsm/kg. As an interim limit, a maximum of 1,200 mOsm/kg is recommended. To stay below that, the glycerol content should not exceed 9.9 weight percent.

AQUAglide contains glycerin as its only moisture-binding substance, but the amount is not published. It is therefore not possible to determine whether the product is below 380, below 1,200, or within the range of 2,000–6,000 mOsm/kg. What can be established is that the formula lacks propylene glycol and other glycols, which otherwise contribute to osmolality, and that glycerin is listed in second place.

Who should choose something else?

The manufacturer’s own guidance is brief. The product page directs anyone with known allergies or who is sensitive to certain substances to the ingredient list and advises that anyone who gets a reaction should wash off the gel and, if needed, contact a doctor or a gynecologist. The manufacturer’s FAQ states that allergies most often relate to fragrances, colorants, preservatives, and flavorings, and that fewer ingredients mean a lower risk of allergies.

Based on that, three groups are worth mentioning. Anyone who reacts to phenoxyethanol or benzoic acid should avoid the current formula. Anyone who avoids parabens should check the label on the tube that is delivered, because the older formula version with sodium methylparaben is still described by two Swedish retailers. And anyone who wants to avoid glycerin has the manufacturer’s own alternative in AQUAglide sensitive.

The manufacturer also brings up a fourth group: people who are trying to get pregnant. Both the German and the English product page state that gynecologists recommend minimal or no use of lubricant when trying for a baby, since lubricants can make fertilization more difficult. AQUAglide is neither contraception nor spermicide and does not protect against infections.

Condoms and sex toys

Compatibility is where AQUAglide is most clearly documented—on the product page, in the instructions for use, and on the tube itself.

Can you use AQUAglide with a condom?

Yes, with latex condoms according to the manufacturer. The product page states "latex- und kondomgeeignet", the instructions for use say "latexcondom compatible", and the tube bears the text "kondomgeeignet / condom compatible". The manufacturer also mentions its own MY.SIZE condoms as compatible. The instructions for use and the FAQ are specific about how: the lubricant is applied to the outside of the condom when it is put on. The FAQ explains why—if the gel ends up on the inside or on the penis, it increases the risk that the condom tears.

Polyisoprene and polyurethane condoms are not mentioned, either on the product page, in the instructions for use, in the FAQ, or in the product information leaflet. Polyisoprene is the material that most latex-free condoms are made of, so the information is relevant for anyone with a latex allergy. A water-based lubricant without oil usually isn’t a problem for these materials, but that’s a conclusion about the material category, not information from the manufacturer.

The manufacturer’s FAQ also includes general advice about lubricants: look for the CE mark and the text "kondomgeeignet" on the packaging before using a lubricant with a condom. AQUAglide has that text on the front.

Does AQUAglide work with silicone sex toys?

Yes, and here the manufacturer is unusually explicit. The instructions for use state that AQUAglide works very well with sex toys, "also with silicone products", and the product information leaflet repeats "sogar aus Silikon"—even made of silicone. The FAQ explains that a water-based lubricant cannot damage silicone sex toys, and that silicone-based lubricants should be avoided with toys made of silicone.

The product page also describes use directly on the toy and recommends the manufacturer’s cleaning product clean'n'safe to remove the gel completely from it. Joyland states in its product text that the lubricant works with sex toys regardless of material, and WorldCondoms lists "Friendly with Silicone Toys and Latex"—two retailer claims that match the manufacturer’s.

The tube, the label, and shelf life

AQUAglide 200 ml is delivered in a tube, not in a pump bottle. The manufacturer’s FAQ mentions that the best-before date is embossed in the tube’s rim, and the product information leaflet explicitly distinguishes between "Gleitgel 200 ml" and the pump bottles of 75, 125, and 1000 ml. In the pictures, the tube is placed on the lid. The manufacturer does not say in the text what kind of closure the lid has—flip-top or screw cap, and none of the stores does either.

The product information sheet states the weight is 231 grams and the dimensions are 7.8 × 4.8 × 17.0 centimeters for the 200 ml tube. The stores are close but not exact: Mshop states 0.24 kilo, WorldCondoms 232 grams, and Joyme 260 grams, with dimensions of 45 × 170 × 45 millimeters. The height matches the manufacturer’s, but the width and weight do not, and the manufacturer’s information applies.

According to the product information sheet, the label text is available in seven languages — German, English, Spanish, Dutch, Italian, Danish, and Greek — but not in Swedish. The English text makes the tube readable for most people, but Swedish instructions for use and Swedish warning texts are available only in the stores’ own product texts.

How long does AQUAglide last after opening?

Twelve months. The manufacturer’s FAQ states that water-based lubricants last 36 months unopened and 12 months after opening, and the product information sheet states the same 12 months specifically for the 200 ml tube. The older version of the sheet also states that the product should be stored between 5 and 25 °C, and the FAQ advises storing lubricants dry, cool, and protected from direct sunlight.

Twelve months is twice as long as pjur Aqua, whose label bears the symbol 6M. For a 200 ml tube, that’s a practical difference: the larger package gets used to a greater extent before the shelf life has run out. The manufacturer also advises not to use a lubricant that looks more cloudy, has become more free-flowing, or smells different than usual.

How do you wash it off?

With water. The product page states that AQUAglide can be washed off completely with water, and the FAQ specifies lukewarm water. No soap is required according to the manufacturer. The product page also covers textiles: dried-on residues in bed linens should be removed without stains using standard detergents. That’s a practical difference compared with oil-based lubricants and vaseline, which the manufacturer’s FAQ describes as difficult to remove and prone to staining.

Three labels in circulation

The images of the tube that the manufacturer and the stores publish show at least three label versions. The manufacturer’s own product image shows "medizinisches Gleitgel / medical lubricant", the text "haut- und schleimhautverträglich", a dermatest stamp marked 2019, and "Made with Love in Europe". Mshop’s image also shows "medizinisches Gleitgel", but with "dermatologisch + klinisch getestet" in the features list. Peppery Spots’ image shows a tube labeled "Premium Gleitgel / Premium lubricant", "dermatologisch getestet", "Das Original", and "Made with Love in Germany".

It matches the difference between the two versions of the product information sheet, where one calls the product a medical device and the other does not. The country of manufacture also has two wordings: the product information sheet and Shop Apotheke state "Made with Love in Germany", while the manufacturer’s overview page states "MADE IN EUROPE". Joyland and Joyme write "Made in Germany", and Peppery Spot lists Germany as the country of origin. Which tube you get from a specific store cannot be determined in advance.

AQUAglide Neutral compared with the alternatives

Four comparisons are relevant: against the best-known water-based lubricant in the same price range, against the cheapest water-based alternative, against a hybrid lubricant in the same volume, and against a glycerin-free alternative. All prices are the lowest price in stock from the retailers’ product feeds on September 12, 2026.

Against pjur Aqua 100 ml

Pjur Aqua is sold in 100 ml and cost from 99 SEK, i.e. 99 SEK per 100 ml. AQUAglide Neutral costs 74.50 SEK per 100 ml at the cheapest store—about a quarter less per milliliter—in a package twice as large.

Differences in the documentation go both ways. Pjur publishes the back side of the label with the CE marking and the number of the notified body, which JOYDIVISION does not do for AQUAglide. JOYDIVISION, in turn, publishes a pH range, while pjur’s product page for Aqua does not state any pH value, and states a shelf life of twelve months after opening for pjur Aquas six. Neither of the manufacturers publishes the osmolality.

Against EasyGlide Waterbased 150 ml

EasyGlide Waterbased is the cheapest water-based lubricant in this edition’s catalog: 150 ml for 89 SEK, i.e. a little over 59 SEK per 100 ml. AQUAglide Neutral is about a quarter more expensive per milliliter even at the cheapest store. So the person primarily looking for the lowest milliliter price for a water-based lubricant has a cheaper alternative.

Against Just Glide Performance 200 ml

Just Glide Performance is sold in the same volume, 200 ml, and cost from 119 SEK—59.50 SEK per 100 ml. In the product feed, it is described as "Water-based + Silicone", i.e. a hybrid lubricant. This makes the comparison less straightforward than the price suggests: AQUAglide is pure water-based, and the manufacturer explicitly states that it works with silicone sex toys. For someone who uses silicone toys, that information—not the 15 SEK per 100 ml—should be what decides.

Against Swede Original Woman Sensitive 120 ml

Swede Original Woman Sensitive is sold in the product range as a glycerin-free lubricant and cost from 149 SEK for 120 ml — the same lowest price as AQUAglide, but for 80 ml less. That comes to just over 124 SEK per 100 ml, so about two thirds more expensive per milliliter. The comparison is relevant for someone who wants to avoid glycerin: there, the price difference is the cost of avoiding AQUAglide’s second most common ingredient. JOYDIVISION’s own glycerin-free alternative, AQUAglide sensitive, is another way to solve the same thing.

Price range: 149 to 229 SEK at four stores

Four Swedish stores sell AQUAglide Neutral 200 ml with EAN 4028403117046. Cheapest is Joyland at 149 SEK, followed by Sexonic at 222 SEK and Mshop and Joyme at 229 SEK each. The difference between the lowest and highest price is 80 SEK, or just over 50 percent of the lowest price, for an identical tube.

Three out of four had the tube in stock at the price check on September 12, 2026: Joyland, Mshop and Joyme. Sexonic was listed at 222 SEK but was out of stock. Sexonic prices in euros, and the store’s product page showed September 26 at 20,24 euros, reduced from 24,99 euros. Joyland states 199 SEK as the regular price and 149 SEK as the discounted price, a 25 percent discount.

Calculated per milliliter, AQUAglide costs 74,50 SEK per 100 ml at Joyland and 114,50 SEK per 100 ml at Mshop and Joyme. Mshop itself writes 114,5 SEK per 100 ml on its product page. Shipping can make a bigger difference than the price: Joyland has free shipping over 995 SEK, Mshop over 999 SEK and otherwise 39 SEK, and Joyme over 899 SEK. So someone who buys a single tube pays shipping regardless of store.

As a comparison with Germany, where the product has a pharmacy number: the manufacturer’s recommended retail price is 18,44 euros. Sanicare sold the tube for 9,95 euros, and the price comparison website MediPreis stated a lowest pharmacy price of 7,99 euros, 39,95 euros per liter. The manufacturer’s recommended price for the 1000 ml pump bottle is 62,04 euros, i.e. 62,04 euros per liter versus 92,20 euros per liter for the 200 ml bottle—someone who uses a lot of lubricant and manages to use up a liter within twelve months pays significantly less per milliliter for the larger package. Joyland also sells 1000 ml.

When the sources disagree

The review found five issues worth reporting.

The first and most important concerns the ingredients. The manufacturer’s current list contains phenoxyethanol, allantoin and benzoic acid; the manufacturer’s own product information sheet and two Swedish stores state sodium methylparaben, sodium benzoate and lactic acid. The manufacturer’s product page applies, but the list on the tube you receive is the only reliable check.

The second concerns classification. The manufacturer’s product page and the older version of the product information leaflet call AQUAglide a medical device; the newer version of the leaflet does not, and one of the labels that resellers show says “Premium Gleitgel” instead of “medizinisches Gleitgel”. No source states a CE number or risk class.

The third concerns the country of manufacture: “Made with Love in Germany” in the product information leaflet and on one of the labels, “MADE IN EUROPE” on the manufacturer’s overview page, and “Made with Love in Europe” on the manufacturer’s current product image.

The fourth concerns weight and dimensions: the manufacturer states 231 grams and 7.8 × 4.8 × 17.0 centimeters, Joyme 260 grams and 45 × 170 × 45 millimeters, Mshop 0.24 kilo.

The fifth concerns the manufacturer as a legal entity: JOYDIVISION international AG in the product information leaflet, JOYDIVISION International GmbH on the website, and Dr. Dagmar Lohmann pharma + medical GmbH in the product registers of the German pharmacies.

Who is AQUAglide Neutral suitable for—and who is it not for?

It’s right for you if you want a clean, water-based lubricant in a larger package at a lower per-milliliter price than pjur Aqua—provided you shop where it’s the cheapest. It’s right for you if you use sex toys made of silicone, because the manufacturer explicitly states that AQUAglide works with them, and if you use latex condoms. It’s right for you if you want a published pH range and twelve months of shelf life after opening, and if you want to be able to rinse the lubricant off using just water.

It suits you less if you want to know the osmolality before you buy, because it’s not published, and if you want to see the CE number and risk class, because those are not published either. It’s not for you if you want to avoid glycerin, and not for you if you react to phenoxyethanol or benzoic acid. If you avoid parabens, you should check the label on the tube you get, because an older Rx version with sodium methylparaben is still described by two Swedish retailers. And the price makes a big difference: at 229 SEK, AQUAglide is more expensive per milliliter than pjur Aqua at the cheapest store.

Complaints, right of withdrawal, and the hygiene exception

JOYDIVISION does not indicate any voluntary manufacturer warranty for AQUAglide, and that’s normal for a consumable product. What applies are your statutory rights. Under konsumentköplagen, you have a three-year right to complain about defects—e.g., a tube that leaks on delivery or a cap that can’t be closed. Normal use and a product that has passed its shelf life after opening, on the other hand, are not a defect.

For distance purchases, the right of withdrawal applies for fourteen days under the Act on Distance Contracts and Contracts Outside Business Premises. However, Konsumentverket (the Swedish Consumer Agency) advises that the right of withdrawal does not apply to goods that, for health or hygiene reasons, are sealed and where the seal has been broken. An opened tube of lubricant typically falls into that category. You can normally withdraw an unopened tube; opened, probably not.

The stores may offer more than the law requires.
