How to choose a vibrator: material, sound level, and drive technology

The category includes two completely different drive technologies. Air-pressure technology works with negative pressure and pulsing air; it is consistently quieter and more dependent on the tip fitting. A rotating eccentric motor provides classic vibration, comes in more form factors, and is cheaper to manufacture. None of them is better in itself—they do different things, and that’s why the reviews show drive technology in each product card.

Material: medical-grade silicone above all else

Medical-grade silicone is non-porous, phthalate-free, and can handle 60-degree water. Softened PVC and what is sold as jelly rubber has a porous surface that can’t be disinfected. Combinations of silicone and ABS are perfectly fine, but look for the seam where the materials meet—that’s where dirt collects. More about this in the glossary.

Sound level: why the number is rarely comparable

Sound level is the piece of information that manufacturers are worst at publishing in this category. Satisfyer and Womanizer rarely state it at all, Lelo sets a ceiling of "under 60 dB" that appears identically across multiple models, and where a value is missing, measurement distance and measurement method are almost always lacking. Two numbers without an indicated distance can’t be compared: the same product can be measured to 45 or 55 dB(A) depending on whether the microphone is ten or fifty centimeters away. Price: what you actually get for your money

The connection between price and rating is weak in this category. What you pay more for is more consistent casting, a longer warranty, and a charging solution that holds up—rarely more settings. Also expect the same article number to cost widely different amounts depending on the store: for the best-selling models, it regularly differs by over one hundred percent between the cheapest and the most expensive Swedish retailers on the same day.
