Yes—an intact, undamaged borosilicate-glass or tempered-glass dildo is one of the safest materials for a sex toy: non-porous, free of plasticizers, and easy to get completely clean. The risk lies in damage and sudden temperature changes, so check the glass for cracks before every use and follow the manufacturer’s temperature limits.
Glass dildos look fragile, and that’s the most common reason people wonder whether they’re safe. The answer is that the material itself is among the safest options for sex toys. Glass is non-porous, it doesn’t need plasticizers, it tolerates all types of lubricants, and it doesn’t age. A glass dildo has no battery that runs out and no surface that becomes sticky over the years.
What can make a glass dildo unsafe is damage. A crack, a chip, or a nick in the surface can make the glass sharp or weaker, and then the dildo should not be used. The other risk is sudden temperature changes, which can cause the glass to crack. Both risks can be handled with two habits: check the glass before every use, and follow the manufacturer’s temperature limits.

Two words show up repeatedly in descriptions of glass dildos, and they mean different things. Borosilicate glass is a type of glass—a composition. It’s the same type of glass used for lab glassware and oven dishes, and it tolerates temperature changes significantly better than regular glass because it expands less when heated. Tempered glass, on the other hand, describes a treatment that makes the glass stronger, and it doesn’t say anything about what type of glass it is.
In practice, it’s the manufacturer’s job that matters, and it varies. Satisfyer states in the manual for Dazzling Crystal 2 solid borosilicate glass. Toy Joy lists borosilicate glass for its Glass Worxx series. Gildo lists tempered glass for Glass Dildo No. 5 but it doesn’t specify the type of glass. For Gildo No. 4For several Icicles models, the manufacturer lists only “glass”—borosilicate then appears only in the stores’ wording.
If the type of glass is missing, that does not mean the glass is bad—but it does mean you know less about how well it withstands temperature. Then you should be extra careful with heat and cold, and above all stick to room-temperature or lukewarm water.
Non-porous. The glass surface is completely sealed. Bacteria and odors can’t penetrate the material, and a glass dildo can therefore be made completely clean. Porous materials like TPE and PVC can only be cleaned on the surface. Read more in safe materials in sex toys.
No plasticizers. Glass doesn’t need phthalates, no BPA, and it contains no latex. The whole question of what soft plastic can release becomes irrelevant.
All lubricants work. For silicone toys, use a water-based lubricant, since silicone-based lubricants can damage the surface. Glass is not affected—Satisfyer and Gildo both state that their glass dildos work with all types of lubricants, including silicone-based. However, there is one exception: Toy Joys’ manual for Crystal Heart requires a water-based lubricant, even though the product page says all types. Follow the manual when it is more strict.
Nothing wears out. A glass dildo has no electronics, no battery, and no surface that breaks down. Satisfyer offers a 15-year warranty on Dazzling Crystal 2.
Make it a habit before every use, and always after the dildo has fallen or hit something. It takes less than a minute.
1. Hold the dildo up to the light and slowly rotate it. A crack is often visible as a thin line that catches the light at a different angle than the rest of the glass.
2. Slowly glide your fingertips along the entire surface, including the base and any ridges or knobs. Check for chips, splinters, and unevenness.
3. Look extra closely at the transitions—where the shaft meets the base, and around ridges, bumps, and knobs. That’s where the shape is most complex.
4. If you find a crack, a chip, or a nick: don’t use the dildo. This also applies if the damage is small. Glass can’t be repaired.
The manufacturers are clear that glass is not unbreakable. Pipedream warns in the manual for Icicles No. 2 that the glass can chip or break if it falls onto stone or tile floors. So a store that describes a glass dildo as unbreakable is therefore wrong.
Glass conducts heat better than silicone and keeps its temperature for a long time. That’s why glass dildos are sold for temperature play—the dildo can be warmed in hot water or cooled in the refrigerator. But the limits differ between manufacturers, and those who publish them are clear.
Satisfyer states for the Dazzling Crystal 2 that the maximum is 60 °C when heating, with lukewarm water, and the minimum is −5 °C when cooling, in the refrigerator. Boiling water and a freezer are explicitly forbidden. Toy Joys manual forbids heating over 45 °C for Crystal Heart. Gildo states a few minutes in the refrigerator or under warm and cold water. Pipedream warns in the manual for Icicles No. 5 about extreme temperature changes.
Several manufacturers publish no limit at all, even though they sell the product for temperature play. Then the safe rule of thumb is to stick to lukewarm water and the refrigerator—never boiling water, never a freezer, never a microwave—and to let the dildo change temperature gradually.
Warm or cool gradually. Put the dildo in lukewarm water for a while instead of pouring hot water over a cold dildo, and don’t take it straight from the refrigerator to warm water. It’s the quick changes that put stress on the glass.
Check how it feels before use. Glass keeps its temperature longer than you think. Test it against the inside of your wrist—if it’s meant to be used on mucous membranes, it should feel pleasant, not hot or ice-cold.
Check the glass afterwards. Temperature play is one time when an existing microcrack can grow, so look at the dildo before putting it away.
Glass itself works well anally—porous-free and easy to clean. But the same rule applies as for all anal toys: the dildo needs a flared base or a flange that is clearly wider than the shaft, and the manufacturer must state that it’s made for that.
That’s exactly where glass dildos differ the most. Gildo states that the flat base on No. 4 and No. 5 makes them suitable for use anally as well. Toy Joys Crystal Heart has a handle that’s wider than the largest of the rough spheres. Satisfyer, on the other hand, does not specify anal use for Dazzling Crystal 2, which lacks a foot, and for Glass Worxx Crystal Cock the sphere in the base is a grip rather than a stop base, so it needs to be held in.

Yes, if you know what you’re getting into. The advantages are the same as for all—hygiene, all lubricants, and no electronics. What makes glass different from silicone is hardness and weight. A glass dildo doesn’t give, and it weighs more than it looks: Satisfyer states 261 grams for Dazzling Crystal 2, and the shops list around 470–500 grams for the Gildos models.
So choose a moderate diameter, preferably a shape that tapers toward the tip, and a smooth surface before one with ribs or bumps. How you read the measurements is in what size dildo should you choose. If you’re completely new, there’s also first dildo.
Clean before and after each use with lukewarm water and mild soap, or a sex toy cleaner. Satisfyer specifies lukewarm water, mild soap, and toy cleaner for Dazzling Crystal 2. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a clean towel.
Dishwasher and boiling are the manufacturer’s decision, not yours. Pipedreams packaging for Icicles No. 8 It states that it can be used in the dishwasher, while Satisfyer forbids boiling water for Dazzling Crystal 2. If the manufacturer has not explicitly allowed it, use only water and soap. Also avoid strong jets of water and harsh chemicals.
Store the glass dildo separately, preferably in a fabric pouch, so it doesn’t knock against other toys or hard objects. Several glass dildos are delivered without a pouch—then a soft pouch or a towel in the box is a cheap safeguard. A glass dildo has no limited lifespan like a battery-powered toy, but it should be disposed of immediately if it has a crack, a chip, a nick, or a scratch you can feel with your finger. This also applies if the damage is on the base. Wrap it properly before you throw it away, so that nobody cuts themselves.
