A dildo is a form without a motor that provides fullness and pressure, while a vibrator has a motor that creates vibrations. Between them there are vibrating dildos, rabbit vibrators, and G-spot vibrators that combine both—and which one you should choose depends on whether you’re looking for the feeling of fullness, vibration against the clitoris, or both.
The difference is in the motor. A dildo is a shape—realistic, smooth, curved, or textured—that you insert and move yourself. It doesn’t vibrate, has no battery, and no buttons. A vibrator has one or more motors that create vibrations, and it doesn’t necessarily have to be made to be inserted: many vibrators are used only externally against the clitoris.
In practice, the categories blur. A vibrating dildo is a dildo shape with a built-in motor. A rabbit vibrator has both a shaft for the inside and an arm for the clitoris. A G-spot vibrator is curved to reach the front vaginal wall. The question is therefore rarely either–or, but rather what you want the toy to do: provide fullness and pressure, provide vibration, or both at the same time.
A dildo is a completely manual toy. The feel comes from shape, size, firmness, and movement—the things you do with it yourself. Because there’s no electronics, most dildos are easy to take care of: no battery that ages, no charging cable, and no casing that has to be airtight.
What differentiates dildos is above all the material, base, and firmness. Silicone is the most common body-friendly material. Glass and metal are hard, non-porous, and can handle all types of lubricants. Some realistic models have double density – a firmer core under a softer surface—so as to mimic the feeling of skin over something solid. The base determines how you can use it: a suction cup attaches to smooth surfaces, and a flat base can often be used in a harness for strap-on.

A vibrator is a toy with a motor. It is most often powered by a built-in rechargeable battery, sometimes by regular disposable batteries. The vibration is the point, so things like the number of motors, how the intensity is regulated, run time, and water resistance matter more than the shape itself.
Many vibrators are made for external use. For many people, the clitoris is the most sensitive area, and a small bullet, a massage wand, or a pneumatic clitoral simulator is used entirely on the outside of the body. Other vibrators have a shaft that is inserted, and that’s where the similarity to dildos begins.
Because a vibrator contains electronics, you need to check two things that don’t exist on a dildo. The first is the ingress protection rating: IPX7 according to the IEC 60529 standard means the product can be submerged in one meter of water for 30 minutes, while a lower rating or no rating at all means it is only allowed to be wiped dry. The second is which lubricant the manufacturer approves – more about that further down.
Between the pure dildo and the pure vibrator, there are three types that answer the most common question: what do I do if I want both filling and vibration?
A vibrating dildo is a dildo-shaped toy with a motor, often realistic or only slightly curved. Start with what you already know about your body. A few rules of thumb:
Choose a dildo if you’re after the feeling of fullness, pressure, and movement, if you want to use it in a harness, or if you want something that’s completely silent, doesn’t need charging, and is easy to keep clean.
Choose an external vibrator if clitoris stimulation is the most important thing for you. Then an insertable part isn’t necessary at all, and a clitoris stimulator or a massage wand can be a better first purchase than a dildo.
Choose a rabbit if you want inside and clitoris stimulation at the same time in the same toy. Choose a G-spot vibrator or a vibrating dildo if you want vibration inside but prefer to handle clitoris stimulation separately.
If you’re unsure, it’s often smart to start externally and keep it simple. A toy with fewer functions is easier to get to know, and it shows you what you actually like before you buy something more advanced.
A dildo made of silicone, glass, or metal without electronics can be cleaned thoroughly with mild soap and water. A vibrator should be cleaned according to its enclosure class: an IPX7 product can be rinsed under the tap, while a product without a class only needs to be wiped off. Charging contacts and the battery compartment need to be dry before you charge or replace the battery.
The lube is the other difference. Silicone-based lubricants can damage the surface of silicone toys, and that’s why many manufacturers specify water-based lube.
