Warm the sleeve in lukewarm water, add water-based lubricant, and regulate the suction with the cap if the masturbator has one. Afterward, you rinse the sleeve immediately, let it dry completely, and don’t put it back until it’s dry—care determines how long it lasts.
A masturbator is a soft sleeve or channel that surrounds the penis. It can be fully manual, like a Fleshlight, or have a motor for vibration, heat, or air pressure. The basic principle is the same: the sleeve should be warm, well-lubricated, and clean.
Before: rinse the sleeve in lukewarm water so it becomes body-warm and soft. During: use plenty of water-based lubricant, both in the opening and on the penis, and regulate the suction with the cap if there is one. After: rinse immediately, let it dry completely, and store it dry.
It sounds easy, and it is—but it’s the care that makes a masturbator that lasts for years instead of one that becomes sticky or molds after just a few weeks. The information below comes from the manufacturers’ own care guides and specifications.
Manual with casing. The classic Fleshlight design: a sleeve in a skin-like material inside a hard casing with a cap at the back end. The cap controls the suction. Fleshlight Stamina Training Unit rymmer according to the manufacturer up to 9 inches in length and 7½ inches in circumference, and has a texture with large bumps all the way through the channel.
Open on both ends. Shorter sleeves like Fleshlight Quickshot Riley Reid lack a back piece and don’t build any suction, but are easy to rinse straight through and also work for couples play.
With a motor. Satisfyer Men Heat Vibration heats the silicone to 39 degrees and vibrates, and Arcwave Ion 2 uses pulsing air pressure against the frenulum. Motorized models require charging but do more of the work; read more in vibrators for men.
The circumference is more often the limiting factor than the length. Fleshlight states that Quickshot can feel too tight for someone who is thicker than about 14 centimeters in circumference, and then refers to the full-size models. Flight models fit up to 7 inches in length and 5½ inches in circumference, while full-size models fit up to 9 inches and 7½ inches.
Measure before you buy. Opened masturbators usually can’t be returned for hygiene reasons, and Fleshlight explicitly does not accept opened items for return.
A sleeve that’s at room temperature feels cold and stiff. The easiest way to warm it is to rinse it in lukewarm water for a while before use, or to let it sit in a sink with lukewarm water. Avoid hot water—Fleshlight states that hot water damages the material, and the water should be lukewarm, not scalding hot.
There are also accessories.Fleshlight Sleeve Warmer is a heating rod which, according to the manufacturer, reaches 40 degrees in less than five minutes and then holds the temperature. A masturbator with built-in heat does the same thing: Satisfyer Men Heat Vibration heats the insert to 39 degrees, and the manufacturer states that it should be heated for two to five minutes and that the temperature should always be tested first against the back of the hand or the forearm.
Use a water-based lubricant unless the manufacturer states otherwise. Fleshlight states that only water-based should be used on the sleeves, because other types can damage the material over time—oil-based products are absorbed into the material and make the surface swollen and sticky. A silicone-based lubricant can damage silicone sleeves, as in Satisfyer and Arcwave models.
Apply lubricant both in the opening and on the penis. Satisfyer instructs for Men Heat Vibration that the lubricant is applied in the opening and distributed evenly inside. Reapply when it starts to resist; an open sleeve draws in more lubricant because it runs out at both ends. More about the choice in which lubricant should you choose.
On a Fleshlight with a closed outer casing, the back cover controls the suction. When the cover is tightened, the air is sealed in between the sleeve and the casing and creates a distinct vacuum with every movement. If you unscrew the cover, the air escapes and the suction decreases; fully open, it practically provides no suction. The adjustment is stepless and can be changed during use, and a more open cover also makes the product quieter.
Start with the cover slightly open and tighten gradually. If the suction is too strong at the beginning, it can easily become uncomfortable, especially during insertion.
Other designs solve the same thing in their own ways.Satisfyer Men One has an internal pressure regulator with a pump that adjusts how tight the channel is. Arcwave Ion 2 replaces the suction with pulsating air pressure in eight steps, and the Smart Silence function makes the pump work only when the sensor is covered.
1. Rinse the sleeve in lukewarm water so it becomes warm and soft. If it’s motorized: charge it in advance and restart the heat if it has one.
2. Open the lid fully or almost fully.
3. Apply lubricant to the opening and on the penis. Start with more rather than less.
4. Insert slowly. The sleeve is tight at the beginning and softens as it warms up.
5. Tighten the lid gradually until the suction feels good. On a motorized model: start at the lowest level.
6. Reapply lubricant when needed. Keep the outer casing steady—or secure it if you have a mount.
7. Rinse the sleeve right after use, before lubricant and body fluids dry in.
Fleshlights own guide describes cleaning in nine steps, and the principles apply to most manual masturbators with a skin-like sleeve:
Remove the sleeve from the casing. Rinse it under running lukewarm water for about 30 seconds. Hold one opening closed, fill the sleeve with water, hold the other opening closed, and shake for 5 to 10 seconds. Rinse again.
Use soap only on the hard outer casing, never on the sleeve. Fleshlight instead recommends its antibacterial spray. Never turn the sleeve inside out—according to the manufacturer, this can create micro-cracks that become a breeding ground for mold.
Motorized masturbators are cleaned according to their ingress protection rating. Arcwave Ion 2 has a sleeve that screws off the unit, and both the sleeve and the unit are IPX7: rinse both parts in warm water, use cleaning products for intimate products, and dry with a lint-free cloth. Arcwave forbids boiling and dishwashers and specifies a maximum of 45 degrees. For Satisfyer Men Heat Vibration, the insert is not described as removable, so the tunnel is rinsed through in place.
Fleshlight itself warns that mold can develop both inside and outside the sleeve if it isn’t dried properly, and describes correct cleaning and drying after each use as an obligatory step. It’s the big difference compared to a non-porous toy in silicone.
Let the sleeve dry completely in the air in a cool, dry, and ventilated place before putting it back into the housing. If possible, position it with the opening facing downward so that water runs out. In Fleshlight’s own drying unit, the drying time is stated as 20 minutes for Quickshot, 40 minutes for Flight and Go models, and 60 minutes for full-size models; air drying takes longer.
When the sleeve is dry, a powder for sleeve material can restore the skin-like surface. Fleshlight recommends its Renewing Powder, but states that it isn’t mandatory, and Satisfyer sells a corresponding accessory for the TPE sleeve in Men One.
Store the masturbator dry, cool, and away from direct sunlight—preferably in its housing with the lids on when the sleeve is completely dry. Skin-like materials should not rest against toys made of other materials. More about storage is in store sex toys.
Replace the sleeve when the surface becomes sticky, cracks, or smells even after cleaning. Some models have replaceable sleeves—Satisfyer sells six different ones for Men One—while Fleshlight states that the Stamina Training Unit is not sold as a loose sleeve. Too little lubricant. The sleeve absorbs it, and friction wears both the skin and the material.
Oil- or silicone-based lubricant in the sleeve. The damage can’t be washed away.
Hot water or soap in the sleeve. Both can damage a skin-like material.
Too much suction from the start. Start with the cap open.
Insufficient drying. That’s how mold forms.
