An example: Hidden Desire specifies for its chastity cage Chestity Cock Harness X-Shortthree rings with diameters of 4, 4.5, and 5 centimeters. Converted, that corresponds to an inner circumference of about 12.6, 14.1, and 15.7 centimeters. So the step between two rings is just over half a centimeter in circumference—which is a lot when the fit needs to feel right for hours.
The ring should fit snugly enough that the cage doesn’t slide off, but not so tight that it pinches or makes the skin feel cold or bluish. If you fall between two sizes, it’s usually smarter to start with the larger one. A steel ring has no give at all—if a ring is too tight, it won’t become more comfortable over time.
Also check how many rings are included. The manufacturer also publishes neither an instruction manual nor instructions about wear time. Anyone who is unsure would do well to start with a longer model or a cage made of easy-to-shape plastic, which is cheaper to try.
An important detail is almost always missing: the cage’s inner diameter. Hidden Desire does not publish it for any of the models above—the field refers to the ball ring, not the cage. Therefore, read the specification carefully and don’t assume you know how tight the cage itself is just because the ring measurements are listed.
The material affects weight, hygiene, and how the cage works in everyday life. There are mainly three groups: metal, hard plastic, and softer materials like silicone.
Stainless steel is non-porous, doesn’t take on odors, and tolerates repeated cleaning. It’s also heavy and completely unyielding. One thing to check for metal cages is the alloy. Hidden Desire does not publish a steel alloy for its X-Short model—no designation like 304 or 316 and no information about nickel. Cages made of softer materials like silicone are also available and give way more than steel and hard plastic. It sits in roughly the same place as the ring of a chastity cage, but it has no lock; it’s taken off in an instant, and several models have adjustable width, so you don’t have to guess the size.
The same basic rules apply: start short, take it off if you feel pressure or numbness, and use a water-based lubricant on silicone. The lock is the part of a chastity cage that sets it apart from a regular ring, and it’s also the part that can create a real problem. A steel cage can’t be opened with hand force. If the only key is lost, there’s a metal device on the body that can’t be removed without tools.
So check how many keys are included before you buy. For the Chestity Cock Harness X-Short, the packaging states that there are two keys, but the manufacturer publishes neither the lock type nor the lock dimensions, nor whether it can be swapped for your own lock. This is common in the category, and it means you should test the lock several times before the cage is used for real.
An easy setup is for the key holder to have one of the keys and for the other key to be stored somewhere both of you know about and can access—an emergency key. It shouldn’t be hidden so that it can only be retrieved by one person who may not be at home.
There’s no general time that applies to everyone, and manufacturers rarely publish anything. Hidden Desire doesn’t state any wear time for its cages, and several manufacturers of penis rings do the same. What you can do is build up the time gradually and listen to your body.
Start with a short session when you’re awake and at home, so you notice how it feels and can take the cage off without it being a big deal. Then increase gradually. Take the cage off immediately if any of this happens: pain, numbness, or tingling, swelling, the skin becomes cold, pale, blue, or dark, wounds or chafing, or difficulty urinating. A metal cage triggers metal detectors, and that makes it unsuitable to carry through a security check at an airport. A plastic cage avoids the metal detector but should still be removable if healthcare staff asks for it.

A cage that’s too short for too soon. The X-Short format and closed hood are for someone who already has experience. Start longer or with a lighter material.
A ring that’s too tight. A ring that pinches won’t get better with time, especially not in steel. Choose the larger ring instead, and go down one size if the cage slips.
Only one key, or a key that can’t be reached. Always keep an emergency key in a place where the person wearing the cage can reach it themselves.
Too long stretches at the beginning. Sleeping with the cage on the first night is a common mistake. Build up the time gradually.
To ignore warning signals in order to carry out an agreement. Pain, numbness, swelling, and discoloration mean that the cage should be taken off—nothing else.
To forget to dry it. Water that remains in the lock and in the joints causes odor and a lock that sticks.
