A discreet sex toy is small, doesn't obviously look like a sex toy, makes little noise and has a travel lock or cap so it neither starts up nor shows in your bag. Lipstick vibrators, small bullets and finger vibrators are the most discreet forms – and what decides it is published dimensions, travel lock and charging, not the word “discreet” on the packaging.
Discretion comes down to four things: how big the toy is, what it looks like, how much noise it makes and how easy it is to store and take with you. A small vibrator rattling around in a toiletry bag isn't discreet, and neither is a quiet vibrator the size of a hairdryer.
The most discreet forms are lipstick vibrators, small bullet vibrators and finger vibrators. If you want something worn under your clothes, a small panty vibrator or a vibrating egg is the alternative, and if you want something with no motor at all, there are Kegel balls. Whatever the form, a travel lock – which disables the buttons – is the single most important feature for stopping the toy from starting by itself.
Look at what the manufacturer actually publishes. The word “quiet” without a decibel figure says little, and “discreet” isn't a specification. Dimensions, weight, travel lock and charging connector, on the other hand, are details you can compare.
The most obvious form of discretion is a toy that looks like something else. The lipstick format is the most common: a cylinder with a cap that can sit in a make-up bag without raising questions. In practice it's a small stick vibrator, and it's best suited to external clitoral stimulation.
There are lipstick formats with both ordinary vibration and air pulses. An air pulse model in this format is unusual, as air pulse stimulators are usually larger. Bear in mind that a small format also means a small battery – run time is often short.
Size is what makes a toy easy to hide and take with you. Here the dimensions matter more than the description, because “small” means different things to different manufacturers. Three examples from our reviews show the range.
We-Vibe Tango X is a bullet vibrator measuring 99.8 × 22.9 × 24.3 millimetres – about the size of a thick pen. Fun Factory Be One is even smaller: 7 × 2 centimetres and 28 grams, and sits between your fingers. Womanizer Liberty 2 is an air pulse stimulator measuring 105 × 50 × 40 millimetres and 90 grams, so wider, but with a magnetic cap that covers the stimulation opening.
Small toys are mainly suited to external use. According to its manual, Tango X is not designed for anal use, and that applies to most bullets and mini vibrators. More on the format in best mini vibrators.
Noise is what most often gives a toy away in a shared home. The problem is that most manufacturers publish no decibel figure at all. We-Vibe and ROMP write “whisper quiet” with no measurement, Satisfyer writes “completely silent” for Secret Kiss, and XOCOON labels its product image SILENT – none of them gives a figure.
Some do. Lovense states 36 dB for Lush Mini, but explicitly as the lowest level. Svakom states at most 50 dB for the finger vibrator Echo 2, which is a maximum and therefore more useful when you want to know how it sounds at full power. None of the manufacturers gives a measuring distance or method, so the figures can't be compared directly.
In practice, placement makes a big difference: a toy lying on a hard surface such as a bedside table is louder than one against the body or under a duvet. There's a more detailed rundown in the guide to quiet vibrators.
Another kind of discretion is a toy that can't be seen while it's in use. Panty vibrators sit against the clitoris under your underwear, and vibrating eggs are worn inside. Both are often app-controlled, which means a partner can control them – up close or from a distance.
Here it's weight and size that decide whether it feels discreet in practice. Lovense Ferri measures 74.5 × 27 × 21 millimetres, weighs 35 grams and attaches with a magnet on the outside of your underwear. Lovense Lush Mini has a 31-millimetre insertion diameter and weighs 58 grams. Neither is silent – Lovense itself writes of Ferri that it's discreet but not completely quiet – so they're better suited to a setting with background noise than to a silent room.

The quietest sex toy is one without a motor. Kegel balls, anal beads and dildos make no noise, have no battery that can start up in your bag and no charging cable to explain. Kegel balls can also be worn during the day without anyone noticing – see the guide to Kegel balls.
A toy that starts up in a bag is the least discreet situation there is. The travel lock disables the buttons so that doesn't happen. How it's activated differs between brands: on Tango X and Liberty 2 you hold both buttons for two seconds, on Echo 2 for eight seconds, and Be One has a key lock. If the toy has no travel lock, like ROMP Beat Bullet, the only safe option is to pack it so the button can't be pressed.
A cap or cover is the next level. Secret Kiss has a hygienic cap that slides over the opening, and Liberty 2 a magnetic cap over the stimulation chamber. It keeps the opening clean and makes the shape more neutral.
A storage pouch isn't always included. Tango X, Echo 2, Luna Beads Mini and XOCOON's lipstick vibrator come with a pouch according to the manufacturers, while Lush Mini, Ferri and Love Beads don't. One detail that's often forgotten is the charging cable. Many toys charge with a magnetic or other product-specific cable – Tango X, Liberty 2, Ferri, Lush Mini and Echo 2 all do. That means an extra cable to keep track of, and if it goes missing, no ordinary charger will work.
Secret Kiss and Be One charge with standard USB-C. That makes them easier to take with you, since the same cable as your phone's will work. But the manufacturer stating USB-C isn't the same as the cable being included – check what's in the box.
A toy rated IPX7 can be rinsed under the tap and dried quickly – handy when you share a bathroom. IPX5 only means splash protection: XOCOON's manual explicitly says splash-resistant products must not be used in water. See how to clean sex toys for cleaning material by material.
1. Decide what discreet means to you. Should it not be heard, not show in a bag or not be noticed while in use? The answer points to the form.
2. Read the dimensions. Length, width and weight in the manufacturer's specification tell you more than pictures.
3. Check for a travel lock or cap. If the specification says nothing about a travel lock, assume there isn't one.
4. Look for a decibel figure – and which level it applies to. A maximum value is more useful than a minimum.
5. Look at the charging. USB-C is simplest; a dedicated cable is one more thing to keep track of.
6. Choose a body-safe material. Silicone against the body and a non-porous surface make cleaning quick. More in the guide to body-safe materials.
Choosing on the word “quiet”. Without a decibel figure it's a description, not a measurement.
Forgetting the travel lock after charging. Several models unlock automatically when they're charged.
Storing the toy loose among other things. It can start up, get dusty or come into contact with materials it reacts with.
Putting it on a hard surface during use. The bedside table amplifies the sound; a towel or pillow dampens it.

Discreet toys suit you if you live with other people, travel often, have thin walls or simply don't want the toy to be the first thing anyone sees in a drawer. They're also a good first buy: a small format often feels less overwhelming, and a bullet or finger vibrator is easy to understand. See sex toys for beginners if it's your first.
If you want powerful stimulation or long run time, you'll often have to compromise on size. Then a larger toy with a travel lock and its own pouch may be a better choice than the smallest model on the market.
