Finger vibrator: how it works and who it's for

A finger vibrator is a vibrator you wear on your hand rather than hold in it. It's small – often smaller than a bullet – and attaches with a ring, a sleeve or simply by being held between two fingers. You move your hand as usual, and the vibration comes along with it.

The difference from other small vibrators is the feel. With a bullet vibrator, it's the toy that's in contact with the body. With a finger vibrator, it's still your finger, with the warmth, movement and pressure a hand gives, just amplified. That makes it a gentle way in for anyone who finds an ordinary vibrator feels mechanical, and a toy that blends into foreplay instead of taking it over.

Finger vibrators are made for external use: the clitoris, labia, nipples, perineum and other sensitive spots. They're not made for insertion, and since they sit on your finger they can't be used safely anally – they lack the wide base an anal toy must have.

The most common design: the vibrator sits in or on a silicone sleeve that slides onto your finger. Fun Factory Be One has no ring at all. It's 7 × 2 centimetres and 28 grams and sits between your index and middle finger, with two motors and two contact points. Fun Factory itself classes it as a couples vibrator. Without a ring it fits every hand size, but it only sits as securely as your grip.

A third variant is a small housing with an opening you slide your finger into, and a shaped tip. Pretty Love Peterson measures 100 × 23 × 40 millimetres according to the manufacturer's dimension drawing and has a silicone tongue on the tip. The shape gives you more to work with than a smooth body, but the housing is also bigger on the hand.

Your hand stays in play. Many people trying vibrators for the first time find it hard to know where to hold the toy. With a finger vibrator you do what you already know – move as you would with a finger – and the vibration becomes an enhancement, not a new tool to learn.

Precision. Your finger reaches exactly where you want, at the angle and pressure you want. It's easy to go from light stroking to firm pressure, and to move between different spots.

Free hands for couples. Since the toy sits on your hand, there's no toy to hold between your bodies, and your hand can keep caressing, holding or supporting. 1. Charge it fully and read the manual. Check whether it has a key lock or travel lock and how to unlock it.

2. Wash it – and the sleeve separately if it comes off – with lukewarm water and mild soap, or wipe it down if it isn't waterproof.

3. Put it on whichever finger feels most natural. For most people that's the index or middle finger. It should sit securely but not be tight.

4. Put a little water-based lube on your fingertip or the surface of the vibrator. It makes the movement smoother.

5. Start without vibration. Stroke and caress as usual for a while before switching it on at the lowest setting.

6. Combine movement and vibration. Slow circles around the clitoris, light pressure and simply letting your finger rest with the vibration on all give different sensations. If it gets too intense directly on the clitoris, move to the side or over the clitoral hood.

7. Switch off, clean it and let everything dry completely before charging it and putting it away.

In foreplay, a finger vibrator works as an extension of what you're already doing. It can be used on the clitoris, labia, nipples, perineum and – for those with a penis – along the shaft, on the frenulum and on the testicles.

Run time. This is the category's weakest point, since a small body holds a small battery. Svakom states 1.5 hours for Echo 2 on a 350 mAh battery. Fun Factory states 110 mAh for Be One and about 35 minutes in the quick guide, but 60 minutes on the product page. CalExotics states 60 minutes on low and 45 minutes on high speed for Finger Bunny. Charging. Be One charges with standard USB-C. Echo 2 has a pinhole connector to USB-A, Finger Bunny a product-specific pin connector and Peterson a pin plug – with those, no ordinary phone cable will work. More in rechargeable or battery-powered sex toy.

Waterproofing. Echo 2 and Be One are listed as IPX7 and can be rinsed under the tap. Finger Bunny is IPX6 and the manufacturer explicitly states it isn't submersible. Hygiene. A removable sleeve makes cleaning easier, since no dirt can build up in the join. Echo 2 and Finger Bunny have one. Also check the material: silicone is non-porous and easy to keep clean.

Fit. The size of the ring or opening is rarely published. If you have very slim or thick fingers, a model without a ring, like Be One, may be the safer choice.

Extra features. Echo 2 has an independent heating function at 38 °C, an app and a travel lock. Svakom recommends using the heat without the finger sleeve, since the sleeve puts a layer of silicone between the heating element and the skin. Finger vibrator: best for anyone who wants to keep the feel of a hand, and for couples. Run time is often short – between about 35 and 90 minutes for the models here where the manufacturer states it.

Expecting the power of a big vibrator. A finger vibrator is small and made to enhance a hand, not replace a wand.

Forgetting the sleeve when cleaning. Dirt and lube collect between the sleeve and the vibrator. Take the sleeve off and wash both parts.

Submerging a model that can't take it. IPX6 and models without an IP rating don't belong in the bath, whatever a shop says.

Using oil or silicone lube. Fun Factory explicitly warns that oils and creams can cause irreversible damage to Be One, and silicone lube can damage silicone surfaces. Choose water-based; more in which lube to choose.

Using it with long nails without thinking about it. A finger vibrator brings your finger closer to the mucous membranes than an ordinary toy does. Short, smooth nails make the experience more pleasant and safer.
