Bullet vibrator: what is it and what is it for?

A bullet vibrator is a small, bullet-shaped vibrator that fits in your hand and is mainly made for external, pinpoint stimulation – on the clitoris, nipples or other sensitive spots, alone or with a partner. It isn't made for anal insertion, and most manufacturers explicitly advise against it.

What is a bullet vibrator?

A bullet vibrator – or bullet vibe – is one of the smallest types of vibrator there is. The name comes from the shape: an elongated, rounded body reminiscent of a cartridge. It's roughly the size of a lipstick or a thick pen and has a motor positioned near the tip, so the vibration is concentrated on a small area.

The size is the whole point. A bullet vibrator is easy to hold like a pen, easy to place exactly where you want it and easy to take with you. It takes up little space between two bodies, which makes it one of the easiest toys to use during sex. And because it's small and easy to understand, it's a common first vibrator.

As an example of the size, We-Vibe gives the dimensions 9.98 × 2.29 × 2.43 centimetres for Tango X, while ROMP gives 150 × 33 millimetres for Beat Bullet – a larger bullet that gives you more to hold on to. So the word covers a fairly broad group, from pocket-sized models to ones that are almost as long as a small wand.

How does a bullet vibrator work?

Inside is a small vibration motor and a battery – in the models here a built-in, rechargeable lithium battery. The whole body vibrates, but because the motor sits near the tip, the vibration is felt most clearly there. That's why the shape of the tip matters: a tapered tip gives a concentrated point, a rounded tip a slightly broader and softer sensation.

The controls are simple. Most bullets have one or three buttons. With one button you step forwards through the modes and can't go back – ROMP Beat Bullet, for example, has six intensity levels and four patterns on a single button. With three buttons you can raise and lower the intensity and change pattern separately, as on Tango X with eight intensity levels and seven patterns. If you want to understand how modes and intensity usually work, there's a walkthrough in how to use a vibrator.

A bullet is almost always a vibrator, not an air pulse stimulator. If you're unsure of the difference between vibration against the clitoris and air pulses over the clitoris, it's explained in clitoral stimulator or air pulse toy.

What is a bullet vibrator good for?

External clitoral stimulation. This is the most common use. The tip can be placed directly on the clitoris, to the side of it or over the clitoral hood, depending on how sensitive you are. Many people find it works best to start further out and move closer gradually.

During sex. A bullet is small enough to fit between two bodies in most positions, and either of you can hold it. That makes it one of the most practical toys for couples who want to add clitoral stimulation without changing position. More ideas in which sex toy is best for couples.

Other sensitive areas. Nipples, inner thighs, perineum and – for those with a penis – the frenulum and the underside of the glans. A bullet isn't made specifically for the penis, but the small tip makes it useful in many places. There are also toys built specifically for the penis, see vibrators for men.

As the motor in another toy. Many toys are built around a removable bullet: some prostate vibrators, vibrating cock rings and strap-on sets. The bullet is then the motor and the silicone body the shape. More on that further down.

What a bullet vibrator isn't suited to

Anal use. A standalone bullet has no flared base, and a toy without a base can slip in completely and be hard to get out. The manufacturers are clear: We-Vibe writes that Tango X is not designed for anal use, and ROMP explicitly advises against it in the manual for Beat Bullet. If you want vibration anally, choose a toy made for it, with a wide base – see butt plugs for beginners.

Deep internal stimulation. Some bullets can be inserted a little way vaginally, but they're short, have no curved tip towards the G-spot and can be hard to keep hold of when slippery with lube. If internal stimulation is the main thing, a G-spot vibrator or a rabbit is a better fit; the comparison is in G-spot vibrator or rabbit vibrator.

Anyone who wants powerful, broad vibration. A small motor gives a concentrated sensation. People who like a deep, rumbly vibration over a larger area tend to get on better with a wand vibrator; see how to use a wand vibrator.

Bullet, mini vibrator or vibrating egg – what's the difference?

The terms overlap and are used differently by different shops. This is how they usually differ:

Bullet vibrator: a small, bullet-shaped vibrator that you hold in your hand. Primarily external.

Mini vibrator: a broader umbrella term for small vibrators. It includes bullets but also lipstick-shaped models, small wands and mini wands. They're all compared in best mini vibrators.

Vibrating egg or panty vibrator: a small vibrator made to be worn – either internally, with a tail or a string that lets you get it out, or externally in your knickers. It's often controlled by app or remote, since you can't reach the buttons. Read more in trosvibrator-guiden and in remote-controlled sex toys.

The difference matters for safety: an egg made to be worn internally has a shape that can be retrieved. An ordinary bullet doesn't.

How to use a bullet vibrator – step by step

1. Charge it fully before first use and read the manual. Check whether it has a travel lock, so you know how to unlock it.

2. Wash it with lukewarm water and mild soap, or wipe it down if it isn't waterproof.

3. Put a drop of water-based lube on the tip. It makes the vibration softer and stops the skin chafing.

4. Start on the lowest setting and first hold it against a less sensitive spot, such as the labia or the inner thigh. Move closer to the clitoris gradually.

5. Try both the tip and the side. The tip gives a sharp, pinpoint sensation; the side of the body a broader one. If it gets too intense directly on the clitoris, a thin layer of fabric or holding it against the clitoral hood can help.

6. Only increase the intensity or change pattern once your body has got used to it. Many bullets only step forwards, so learn the order before it matters.

7. Switch off, clean it and let it dry completely before you charge it or put it away.

How to choose a bullet vibrator: five things to compare

Small vibrators often look the same in pictures. The differences are in the specifications, and that's where you should look.

1. Charging and run time

Small bodies hold small batteries, and the models differ a lot here. We-Vibe states up to 120 minutes of use on 90 minutes of charging for Tango X. ROMP states 60 minutes of use on 180 minutes of charging for Beat Bullet – three times as long to charge for half the run time. Also note the charging connector: both Tango X and Beat Bullet charge with a product-specific cable, not a standard USB-C cable, so look after that cable. More on charging, batteries and magnetic cables in rechargeable or battery-powered sex toy.

2. Waterproofing

IPX7 means the toy can be submerged and rinsed under the tap. IPX5 means protection against water jets, not submersion. Tango X and Beat Bullet are listed as IPX7, while XOCOON's lipstick vibrator is IPX5 and the manufacturer's manual says it must not be used in water. The full explanation is in waterproof sex toys.

3. Material against the body

Look at what the tip – the part that actually rests against the skin – is made of. On Tango X the tip is hard ABS plastic and the handle silicone. On Beat Bullet, ROMP states body-safe silicone in the head. Both materials are non-porous, but they feel different: ABS is hard and smooth and transmits vibration sharply, silicone is softer and dampens it slightly. More on materials in body-safe sex toy materials.

4. Travel lock

A bullet often ends up in a handbag or a toiletry bag, where a button easily gets pressed. A travel lock stops it starting by accident. On Tango X it's activated by holding down plus and minus for two seconds, and it deactivates automatically when the toy is charged. Beat Bullet has no travel lock. More on packing toys in travelling with sex toys.

5. Noise level

Few manufacturers publish a measured decibel figure for their bullets. We-Vibe and ROMP just write “whisper quiet” with no measurement. Lovense is an exception and states 36 dB as the lowest level for Lush Mini. If noise is crucial, read quiet vibrators, where the models with published figures are compared.

When the bullet is the motor in another toy

Many toys have no built-in motor but a channel that holds a removable bullet. That has two advantages. The silicone body can be washed separately, and if the motor breaks you can replace just that. Rocks-Off builds its prostate vibrators this way: both O Boy and Rude Boy have a removable RO-80mm bullet powered by a replaceable N battery (LR1).

The downside is that the vibration isn't always where you want it. On O Boy the motor sits in the outer part against the perineum, and the insertable part only vibrates indirectly. And a bullet powered by a disposable battery loses power as the battery runs down – Rocks-Off also advises against rechargeable batteries in these models.

The key here is that the bullet sits in a toy with a wide base. It's the base, not the bullet, that makes it safe for anal use. More on getting started in prostate massage for beginners, and vibrating rings with a bullet are covered in how to use a cock ring.

Common mistakes with small vibrators

Using it anally. This is the most serious mistake. A bullet without a base doesn't belong there, however small it is.

Losing the charging cable. Many bullets have a product-specific cable, and We-Vibe also excludes charging cables from the warranty for Tango X. Keep the cable with the toy.

Using silicone lube. Silicone lube can damage the silicone surface and make it porous. Water-based lube works with all materials; read more in which lube to choose.

Boiling it or putting it in the dishwasher. IPX7 means it can take water, not heat. We-Vibe and ROMP state that the product and battery must not be exposed to temperatures above 45 degrees, which rules out boiling and the dishwasher. How to clean it properly: cleaning sex toys.

Starting on the highest setting. A small tip concentrates the vibration. Start low – there's more to be gained by varying than by maxing it out.

Who is a bullet vibrator for?

Beginners. Small, easy to understand and not intimidating. It's a good way in to finding out what kind of stimulation you like before buying something bigger. More options in sex toys for beginners.

Couples. It fits between your bodies and either of you can control it.

Anyone who travels or wants something discreet. Pocket-sized and often with a travel lock.

Anyone who wants precise, pinpoint stimulation. A tapered tip gives precision a bigger toy can't.

Less suitable for anyone who mainly wants something internal, anyone who wants anal play and anyone who likes broad, powerful vibration. Then a G-spot vibrator, an anal toy with a base or a wand vibrator is a better buy.

Frequently asked questions about bullet vibrators

What is a bullet vibrator?
A small, bullet-shaped vibrator that fits in your hand, with the motor near the tip. It's primarily made for external, pinpoint stimulation of the clitoris and other sensitive spots, and is easy to use during sex.
Can you insert a bullet vibrator?
A little way vaginally, if the manufacturer doesn't advise against it, but it's short and made primarily for external use. A bullet without a flared base should never be used anally – We-Vibe and ROMP explicitly advise against anal use of Tango X and Beat Bullet.
Is a bullet vibrator good for beginners?
Yes, it's one of the most common first toys: small, easy to control and easy to position. Ideally choose one with IPX7, use water-based lube and pick one with a travel lock if you'll be taking it with you.
How long does the battery last in a bullet vibrator?
It varies a lot. We-Vibe states up to 120 minutes for Tango X on 90 minutes of charging, ROMP 60 minutes for Beat Bullet on 180 minutes of charging. Run time is often shorter on the highest setting.
What's the difference between a bullet and a mini vibrator?
A bullet is a type of mini vibrator. Mini vibrator is the umbrella term for small vibrators, which also includes lipstick-shaped models and mini wands.
Can you use a bullet vibrator with a partner?
Yes. It's small enough to fit between your bodies in most positions and either of you can hold it. If it's shared between people it should be cleaned between each use, and a condom can be used on it.
