A sex toy for long-distance relationships is an app-controlled toy that one person wears or uses, while the other controls it from their own phone via the internet—regardless of distance. The toy is paired via Bluetooth to the phone in the same room, and the manufacturer’s app forwards the control over the network. Here’s how it works, what you should check, and which models are built for it.
What makes a sex toy suitable for a long-distance relationship isn’t the shape—it’s the control. The toy must be able to connect to an app that has a long-distance mode, where your partner can control intensity and patterns from their own phone anywhere in the world. Most major manufacturers of app-controlled toys have such a mode: Lovense in the Lovense Remote app, We-Vibe in the We-Vibe app, Satisfyer in Satisfyer Connect, and Svakom in its own app.
The most common shape is a vibrating egg worn inside, for example Lovense Lush 3, and a panty vibrator that sits on the outside, like Lovense Ferri. The most important thing to understand before buying is that the toy itself isn’t connected to the internet. It communicates via Bluetooth with a phone nearby, and it’s the phone that maintains the connection with your partner. The chain looks the same for all manufacturers, even though the buttons in the apps are called different things:
1. The person who uses the toy charges it, turns it on, and pairs it with their own phone via Bluetooth in the manufacturer’s app.
2. Both install the same app. The person who wants to control it doesn’t need their own toy—just the app and an internet connection.
3. Anyone who wears the toy invites the partner—in each case via an account, a link, or a code, depending on the app. We-Vibe describes it as the toy being paired with the phone within Bluetooth range, and the partner being invited via the app.
4. The partner controls it using controls, patterns, or other modes in their app, and the signal goes via the internet to the first phone and then over Bluetooth to the toy.
That means the phone the toy is connected to must be turned on, be connected, and be within Bluetooth range at all times. If you put the phone in another room, the connection can be broken even if the partner has perfect connectivity on the other side of the world.
The range between the toy and the phone differs a lot between manufacturers, and not all of them publish it. Lovense states up to 75 meters outdoors for Lush 3 and up to 93 meters for Lush Mini. We-Vibe states for its couple vibrators up to 30 feet, about nine meters, with clear line of sight, and about six meters all around. IntoYou states up to ten meters for its app-controlled panty vibrator. For Ferri, Lovense publishes no range at all.
The figures apply to clear line of sight outdoors. Walls, the body, and water dampen the radio signal. Lovense, for example, explicitly writes that the Bluetooth connection is not stable in or under water—even for products that are, in themselves, rated IPX7. In the bathtub, you’re therefore practically limited to the buttons on the toy, not the partner’s app.
Lovense Remote provides, according to the manufacturer, manual control, long-distance control, and control with music and sound. For Lush 4, Lovense also indicates control during voice and video calls and between two toys, and according to the manufacturer’s own developer documentation, the vibration command has a value between 0 and 20—i.e., twenty steps.
Satisfyer Connect provides, according to Satisfyer, remote control over Bluetooth or the internet, a pattern designer, a playlist mode where the vibrations follow music, and a microphone mode. The We-Vibe app has, among other things, twelve preset patterns, Touch Mode, Playlist Mode, and a long-distance mode. IntoYous app ActiveJoy has six control methods and shares the control via a code instead of via accounts.
The differences in features are rarely decisive. What matters most in everyday life is that both of you think the app is easy to use, and that the toy can be controlled even without a phone, if you want to use it when you meet up.
An app-controlled egg is inserted vaginally and held in place by its shape, with a curved tail that lies on the outside and carries the antenna. Since it stays in place without being held, it’s hands-free, and the person wearing it can do something else while the partner controls it. The Lovense Lush series comes in three sizes. Lush 3 weighs 75 grams and, according to the manufacturer, has up to 220 minutes of run time. Lush Mini is the smallest, with a 31-millimeter insertion diameter and 58 grams, but the run time drops from 236 to 63 minutes when the intensity goes up. Lush 4 has, according to the manufacturer’s documentation, twenty intensity levels and fast charging. All three charge with the same magnetic cable, which Lovense states is shared with around thirty of their models.

A panty vibrator rests against the clitoris and is held in place by your underwear, most often with a magnet on the outside of the fabric. It isn’t inserted, which makes it a natural choice for someone who would rather have external stimulation. All three below have app control with long-distance mode. The biggest difference is the battery. Lovense states 195 minutes of run time for Ferri; Satisfyer states about 60 minutes for Sexy Secret; and IntoYou up to 50 minutes for its model. For an evening of play, most people will be fine, but if the toy is going to be worn for a longer time, run time is the number you should compare first.
Long-distance toys are not just eggs and panty vibrators. Several couple vibrators, rabbit vibrators, and penis toys all have the same long-distance mode in their apps. An app-controlled sex toy is a connected product, and it’s reasonable to think of it like any other app that handles private matters. Some general advice that applies regardless of manufacturer:
Read what the app requires. Some apps require an account with an email address, others don’t. IntoYou, for example, states that ActiveJoy neither requires registration nor an email address. Also look at what permissions the app asks for—the microphone is only needed if you want to use sound control.
Share control deliberately. A link or code that gives control of the toy should only go to the people you’ve agreed with, and it should be easy to end the session. Check where in the app you see who is connected and how you break the connection.
Use your own, strong password if the app requires an account, and keep the app updated. This applies to all connected products.
Never record or share a video session unless both of you have explicitly said yes. Consent applies at a distance just like when you’re together, and both of you should be able to say stop at any time—turning off the toy or leaving the session should always be okay.
Start with the question of who will use the toy and how. 4. Water resistance. IPX7 means the product can withstand submersion in one meter of water for 30 minutes according to the IEC 60529 standard and makes cleaning easier. Remember that Bluetooth works poorly in water.

Forgetting the phone. The toy loses connection if the phone it is connected to goes out of range, goes into power-saving mode, or loses internet. Keep the phone close and charged.
Forgetting the charging cable. Most app-controlled toys are charged with a magnetic cable that only fits the manufacturer’s products. Choosing based on the number of patterns. Almost all apps offer an unlimited number of patterns. Battery life, fit, and material affect the experience much more.
Sharing the toy without protection. Clean the toy before and after every use, and use a condom if it is shared between multiple people.
